If you drive through the expansive cotton fields of West Texas, the flat horizon becomes familiar. Just a few miles west of Brownfield, Texas, a unique landmark catches the eye: The Roadside Tomb of Christ. This humble Christian shrine offers a peaceful place to pull over and reflects the local faith of rural Texas. For road-weary travelers, it provides a quiet moment of reflection.
Roadside Tomb of Christ: A Landmark on Highway 380
Located in Terry County, Texas on U.S. Highway 380 (Plains Highway), this roadside attraction is easy to spot. A large white cross stands against the flat landscape, marking the location well before you arrive.
Visitors can pull off onto a small dirt-and-gravel shoulder to explore a walk-in replica of the Garden Tomb of Jesus. Built by local landowners on the edge of their private farm field, the faux-stone structure remains open to the public year-round. Outside the entrance, a large circular concrete stone is rolled back from the doorway to symbolize the resurrection.
Inside the small chamber, highway noise noticeably drops. The tomb of Christ features a simple wall inscription that reads “He Is Risen,” alongside a guest log where travelers from across the country leave their names and thoughts.
Vandalism, Fire, and Restoration
Because the shrine is unmonitored and open to the public, it operates on the honor system. Unfortunately, this openness has occasionally left it vulnerable.
In November 2016, vandals filled the tomb with raw cotton from nearby fields and set it on fire. The arson caused significant smoke and structural damage to the interior. Local volunteers and caretakers quickly stepped in to clean the soot, repair the walls, and restore the landmark to its original state.
