Dawson County sits on the southern edge of the Llano Estacado, where the sky seems to stretch forever. Before anyone marked out a boundary, this was a sea of shortgrass prairie. In fact, traditional cotton fields now sit directly beside tall wind turbines and wide solar farms. Consequently, the county has become a key part of the new energy boom. Yet, even as times change and the town grows quieter, the grit and heart of those first settlers still shine through. Ultimately, Dawson County proves that the West Texas spirit runs deep, just as the roots in its soil do.
Community pride in Dawson County is more than just hard work in the fields. Folks in Lamesa say chicken-fried steak was born right here. Every year, the town throws a big festival to celebrate this crispy, golden comfort food. Neighbors and visitors gather for music, laughter, and good food. It feels like a family reunion, with everyone sharing stories and making new memories.
